UJW Johannesburg Feeding Schemes
UJW feeds over 400 people every day
If you’ve never experienced hunger, it is difficult to imagine what it is like to go without food. Sadly, too many people in our impoverished communities suffer from debilitating hunger and malnutrition. And never more so than during the COVID-19 pandemic which has led to devastating unemployment and rapid escalation in food prices.
In the face of this challenge, UJW is privileged to be able to make a difference, thanks to support from our donors and volunteers. For decades we have run several feeding schemes to ensure that hunger is kept at bay for the most vulnerable in our society.

KOSHER MOBILE MEALS
Our Flagship Project
Kosher Mobile Meals provides cooked nutritious kosher meals to over 110 elderly and frail members of the Jewish community in Johannesburg who live independently but are unable to cook for themselves.
UJW is the only organisation in Johannesburg providing kosher cooked food to the elderly. We started this project in 1972 and have run it successfully for almost 50 years. These meals, packed and delivered by volunteers once a week, are made possible by donations and UJW’s regular fundraising initiatives.
Our volunteers who deliver the meals provide a lifeline of companionship to sometimes very lonely people. In some cases they are the only human contact the recipients have with the outside world.
Kosher Mobile Meals was deemed an essential service at the beginning of lockdown and has not missed a beat since then.

ALEXANDRA AFTERCARE AND FEEDING SCHEME
Often Their Only Meal of the Day
The UJW Alexandra Aftercare Centre and Feeding Scheme is based at the Alexandra Lutheran church located in the poverty-stricken community of Alexandra ,Johannesburg. Here we provide a haven of safety and educational support.
The centre is supported by our Alexandra Feeding Scheme which provides warm cooked meals to the elderly and children prepared by our wonderful kitchen staff. Approximately 115 adults and 113 children are fed on a daily basis. These include members of the community as well as the children who attend the Aftercare. They receive warm food consisting of rice/pap, delicious soya and vegetables, packed in individual containers and handed to each person. The Feeding Scheme operates Monday to Friday. For some of our recipients this is their only meal for the day.
Over 50 children attend the aftercare centre where they receive both a nourishing meal and have the opportunity to grow and learn. Homework sessions, educational lessons, arts and craft are carried out on a daily basis. Volunteers from several schools also lend a hand to teach the children and provide fun-filled activities when they can.
We are deeply grateful to the support of our donors who help to keep the doors open.

HILLBROW SOUP KITCHEN
Where a Cup of Soup Means the World
The heart of Johannesburg’s inner city is home to a vast population of impoverished people for whom survival is a daily struggle. Here, every day, from as early as 4am, individuals line up outside the Hillbrow Community Health Centre, waiting for medical treatment.
UJW is proud to serve this community with our Hillbrow Community Health Centre Soup Kitchen that has been running for over 60 years. A cup of nutritious soup means the world to someone who has just had a baby, is waiting for treatment for TB, HIV or general health, or those who unfortunately have been a victim of sexual abuse.
On average the kitchen supplies over 2 200 cups of soup to 1 400 adults and about 800 children per month.
