Heritage, Hope and Haute Couture: UJW Sewing Empowerment School Celebrates June 2026 Graduates

The Union of Jewish Women (UJW) Sewing Empowerment School proudly celebrated its June 2026 graduation ceremony, marking the culmination of four months of dedication, creativity, and personal growth for this year’s remarkable graduates.

The theme for the event, “Heritage”, brought colour, culture and meaning to the runway as graduates showcased stunning garments inspired by South Africa’s rich and diverse heritage. From vibrant traditional influences to contemporary interpretations of cultural dress, each outfit reflected not only exceptional sewing skills but also personal stories, pride, and identity.

What made the occasion even more extraordinary was the journey behind every garment. Many of the graduates began the programme with little or no sewing experience. Four months later, they confidently walked the red carpet wearing beautiful creations they had designed, patterned and stitched with their own hands. Their determination, resilience and talent transformed fabric into fashion and opportunity into achievement.

Established in 2010, the UJW Sewing Empowerment School was created to help address two of South Africa’s most pressing challenges: poverty and skills development. Since its inception, more than 120 students have successfully completed the intensive four-month full-time sewing programme, gaining practical skills that enable them to generate income and build sustainable futures for themselves and their families.

At the heart of the programme is sewing instructor Nomvula, whose patience, creativity and passion have inspired countless students. More than a teacher, she is a mentor and role model who guides each student through their journey with care and encouragement. The school is expertly managed by Ariane Heneck, whose commitment and leadership continue to ensure the programme’s ongoing success and impact.

The Union of Jewish Women extends its heartfelt gratitude to the many generous donors and supporters who make this life-changing initiative possible through donations of fabric, sewing accessories, equipment and financial assistance. Their contributions help provide opportunities for individuals to learn valuable skills, earn an income and create brighter futures.

To the June 2026 graduates: your heritage-inspired creations honoured the past, your skills empower the present, and your futures are yours to design. We are immensely proud of you.
