To commemorate Mandela Day, all branches of the Union of Jewish Women across the country – in Cape Town, Durban, East London, Johannesburg, Port Elizabeth and Pretoria – distributed toothbrushes and toothpaste to thousands of young children at disadvantaged pre-primary and primary schools. Oral hygienists attended at some of the schools to give advice on dental care.

Many of the recipients had never previously owned their own toothbrushes!

Packs of dental care products were also given to the residents at Sandringham Lodge, as well as to Yad Aharon.

The UJW has been participating in Mandela Day since its inception, and this year close on 7 000 persons benefitted from our ‘Catch the Cavity’ project.

The Union of Jewish Women is extremely grateful to members of the public who so generously donated toothbrushes and toothpaste for this project. A special thank you to Colgate which donated almost 5 000 packs and sent their oral hygienists to our chosen schools in 4 different cities. UJW extends a warm thank you to all donors and volunteers for helping us to help those in need.
