This month the spotlight falls on the Durban Union of Jewish Women’s immediate past Executive Co-chairs – Frances Herr and Yael Sapo.
They are both relative “newcomers” to the Executive Committee but have been totally committed to the Union’s aims and objectives since joining. Their personalities complimented each other so well and there was no dissention in their leadership.
Each of them is a dedicated Union worker and since completing a very successful two year term of office has remained involved in various aspects of the Union’s projects.
They have convened and/or assisted on sub-committees for the annual Charity Golf Day – the 24 th event will take place this year.
Frances is our regular, popular “caller” for the monthly bingo games; her very occasional absence elicits several complaints. Yael helps with “hearing and seeing” and thanks to her friendly disposition often has to assist more than one person at a time.
Both Frances and Yael can be relied on to help when and wherever needed. They visit projects (even those which require a two hour trip), help with packing, baking, and in fact, with whatever is needed.
Word of their efficiency soon spread to other communal organizations. Frances is one of the volunteers who, on an almost daily basis, visits Beth Shalom, Durban’s home for Jewish aged. She helps arrange outings and shopping trips, often taking the residents herself. She also purchases stock for the “tuck shop”. Yael assists Durban Jewish Social Services with their Rosh Hashanah Greetings Booklet which is one of their major fundraising efforts.
We are all very proud of Frances and Yael and grateful that despite busy schedules they remain, first and foremost, “Union Girls”.
