SAIDA (The South African Inherited Diseases Association) – initiated this organisation together with South African Medical Research Institute- isolated Tay Sachs gene in Ashkenazi families – still operating
HIPPY SA
During the unrest in 1989 in Orlando East Soweto, a Home Instruction Programme
For Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY) was established.
Today thousands of disadvantaged black children are educated to become school-ready.
MATAL PROJECT
Founded and administered project approximately 1989 – 1993.
Teachers trained to teach science – based programmes in township schools
BONE MARROW REGISTRY OF SA
Initiated by the UJWSA with Mervyn Serebro.
Today the registry comprises of 45,000 names and has saved 126 lives

HUMANITARIAN OUTREACH PROJECTS IN SOUTH AFRICA INCLUDE
- Refurbished comfort rooms for rape and abuse survivors
- Cancer / HIV AIDS projects
- Meals and soup kitchens in hospitals and informal settlements
- Clothing and toiletry packs for rape survivors
- Skills training
- Kangaroo units in neo-natal ICU
- Supplies cakes to police stations
- Bakes birthday cakes for children in children’s homes
- Donates equipment to disabled, hearing and visually impaired
- Supports Child Line
- Gives blankets to winter warmth projects
- Supports old age homes
- Hospice – raises funds via calendar project
- Supplies chemical toilets and other equipment to informal settlements
- Tape Aids for the blind
- Sponsors and assists child protection units at police stations
- Friendship circles
- Shoe project – collects and distributes shoes to children in disadvantaged community schools. Supports Homeless Talk crèches for vendors’ children
- Yad Sarah – Adoption of the Israeli project. Loan of medical equipment on short-term basis e.g. wheelchairs, crutches, walkers etc
OUTREACH SKILLS TRAINING AND EDUCATION IN SOUTH AFRICA
- Literary projects in townships and informal settlements
- Supports creches and nursery schools in disadvantaged area
- Skills training and empowerment programmes
- Workshops for sheltered employment
- Self-help vegetable gardens
- Supports and assists schools for intellectually challenged learners
