So much more than just a meal

How it all started…

Kosher Mobile Meals was conceived in the late 1960s. It emerged when the Union of Jewish Women began to realise the number of incapacitated and needy Jewish people in Johannesburg who could not shop for food or prepare a meal for themselves. At the time, there were about 14 Jewish families who needed help.

Needing and feeding

The UJW decided they would prepare kosher, tasty, nutritionally balanced meals and deliver them to the families and individuals in need. As the initiative grew, the women saw the need to expand and eventually began outsourcing to Sandringham Gardens, where the meals are prepared and cooked. Kosher Mobile Meals volunteers then pack, assemble and deliver parcels to recipients. Today, Kosher Mobile Meals feeds 165 people every day of the week. And each recipient is never without a cooked meal and sufficient food for the day.

Comfort food

The volunteers at Kosher Mobile Meals also recognise that people need other forms of nourishment, in addition to good food, and what makes Kosher Mobile Meals a truly unique project is that it’s not just about meals. Volunteers will not simply pack and deliver meals to recipients; they will visit recipients, find out how they are feeling and provide them with companionship and kindness. A social worker is also employed to monitor the physical, emotional and psychological wellbeing of each recipient and assess individual needs.

Soul food

Deliveries are made to recipients twice a week, with enough meals for an entire week. But nourishment for the soul is often as essential as nourishment for the body. So when a special occasion arises, special deliveries are in order. On Chanukah, deliveries will include some latkes. On Rosh Hashanah, Kosher Mobile Meals will ensure recipients have apples and honey to celebrate the High Holy Days with their fellow Jews.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

There are many elderly members of our community who do not have even one meal a day. Have you ever gone hungry? Kosher Mobile Meals has the volunteers, the inspiration and the facilities to provide hungry members of our community with a good meal for every day of the week. The only thing they’re short of is the funds. If you would like to provide a needy person with a nutritious meal, R35 a day is all that’s needed. Please contribute what you can. Food is not a nice-to-have; it’s a must-have!
