INTERFAITH SEDER

The Union of Jewish Women Johannesburg recently hosted a deeply meaningful interfaith Seder, the idea of Chairman Ingrid Koor, uniting women from our community with women from diverse religious and racial backgrounds in a powerful celebration of shared values, understanding and connection.

Held in the spirit of inclusivity and dialogue, the morning was led by Rebbetzin Temmi Hadar, who guided attendees through the traditions and symbolism of the Passover Seder. With warmth and insight, she unpacked the timeless rituals of the Passover story, drawing compelling parallels between the ancient story of liberation and the lived experiences of women today.

Her reflections focused on themes of freedom, rebirth and reinvention — reminding participants that the Exodus narrative is not only a historical journey, but an ongoing personal and collective one. She encouraged those present to reflect on the idea of moving forward with intention, embracing both present opportunities and future possibilities.

The interfaith nature of the gathering created a unique and enriching environment, where women of different faiths could engage, learn and find common ground. Conversations flowed beyond religious boundaries, highlighting shared aspirations for dignity, resilience and hope.

“This was more than a Seder,” one attendee noted. “It was a reminder that our stories, while different, are deeply connected.”

The Union of Jewish Women Johannesburg continues to play a vital role in fostering community cohesion and social impact. Events such as this interfaith Seder reflect the organisation’s commitment to building bridges, empowering women, and creating spaces where dialogue and understanding can thrive.

As communities around the world grapple with division and uncertainty, initiatives like this serve as a powerful example of what is possible when people come together with openness, respect and a shared vision for a better future.
